History of Amba Theertha

Amba Theertha, named after Goddess Parvathi, is one of Kalasa’s five major water spots or Panchatheerthas or Five Sacred Waters, within about 8 km from the town. Each of these spots is linked with a myth from Hindu mythology.

The five Theerthas are:

  1. Vasistha Theertha, dedicated to sage Vasistha
  2. Naga Theertha, dedicated to the Snake God, Naga
  3. Koti Theertha, a pilgrimage in this region is equal to worshipping 10 million holy waters
  4. Rudra Theertha, dedicated to Lord Rudra
  5. Amba Theertha, dedicated to Goddess Parvathi

Amba Theertha gained prominence because devotees come by here as part of a three-stop temple tour, the other towns being Sringeri and Horanadu. It is also famous for an etching on the rocks where, it is believed, that the Draupadi and the Pandavas are shown with Akshaya Patra.
